51. ARIZONA WILD

Travels with my parents in the early 1950s into Arizona's Sonoran Desert formed one of my earliest experiences of wilderness. The harsh, forbidding landscape of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Saguaro National Park country became a part of me. I accompanied my parents as well, on frequent trips into Monument Valley and on hikes to Rainbow Bridge from the Colorado River -- before Lake Powell drowned Glen Canyon. Responding to the delicate nuances of these landscapes, I was actually beginning natural connections without naming it. My own travels to Toroweap Point-Point Sublime, and the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon came soon after. So did my explorations of the mountains, forest and plateau country of the White Mountains and San Francisco Peaks, and their surrounding Ancient Puebloan pueblos and ruins. I love these places. Continually returning, they form an ever-deepening meditation for me.
